Solvent for Holbein oil paints
Holbein additives are the ultimate aid for artists to enhance the quality of their oil paints. Holbein's entire range of solvents offers unique properties to enhance the consistency or modify the properties of paints with a variety of solvents. Holbein uses the finest raw materials to produce a range of highly regarded Oils, Varnishes, Mediums.
- Oils: The base of oil paint. Essentially, oils (most commonly linseed oil) are used as both a binder and a “vehicle” for oil paint. Oils can be added to paint to change the texture of the paint layer – adjusting the thickness, gloss and drying time. Especially when painting multiple layers, using oils helps to maintain the “flexibility” and durability of the paint layer in compliance with the rule of “fat” on “thin” / thick layer on thin layer / layer with a lot of oil on a layer with little oil or with a lot of solvent / layer with slow drying on a layer with fast drying, preventing the situation of thinning the oil color too much when using solvents.
- Mediums: Used to change the texture of the paint layer – adjusting the thickness, gloss, drying time, flow and pattern. Use in moderation.
Solvents: Used to significantly thin the paint layer. Specially used to clean brushes and palettes after painting. Should only be used for the first/undercoat layers to avoid uneven drying and cracking of the painting.
- Varnishes: Used as a protective layer after the painting has completely dried (6-9 months, up to 1-2 years depending on the thickness of the paint layer).
